RV Body Repair: How to Repair Fender Skirts  September 6, 2013 – 11:22
Warren light weight material body with aluminum fender skirts

When replacing or repairing wheel fender skirts while doing RV body repair, it is a good idea to get parts that were made for your recreational vehicle. In some cases, you can even replace all of them with new skirting that matches your frame. Most skirting on RV vehicles are held in by securing bolts or rivets, and can be easily removed and replaced. The main concern in this situation is to ensure that the shape, and the mold of the new skirts match your wheel hubs. They come in several designs for protection and effect, short to show your wheels, and long skirting to cover them up. If your fender is simply bent or has a tare in it, you can do a repair without replacing the entire panel, which can be very cost effective.

Step 1 - Remove the Skirting

The first part in the RV body repair process it to remove your patient from the vehicle. Once you have the skirting off you will be able to work with it without much problem. Your they do not remove, For skirting that is riveted to the side of the vehicle, you can bore out these rivets with a drill and then remount them once you're finished.

Step 2 - Rework the Skirt Surface

The next step in the RV body repair process, is to determine what type of material your skirt is made from. This will decide which repair materials you are going to need from the materials list, and the method you will use to apply it. The first thing to do is to take sandpaper and rough up the area around the crack or split.

Step 3 - Starting a Patch

Regardless of the materials you are using for your RV body repair, you will need to rough the surface around the break or crack. Once this is done you can use your epoxy, or bonding materials to make a lips around the hole. This is so the mesh will stick into place once it is applied, which will be the base of your repair. Take your mesh and cut it approximately 1 to 2 inches wider than the crack or break. So the patch material should be connected to the skirt a short distance from the break, all the way around the opening.

Step 4 - Apply the patch in Layers

As you continue your patch during the RV body repair, you will want to apply layers to the skirting until the hole is no longer visible. Try not to glob this on and try to apply it as evenly as possible, to prevent bubbling of the surface. You will want to let this dry, and then sand the material down into the proper curve and shape of the fender. This is the reason behind not applying it too heavily, to avoid too much sanding in the end to even up the skirts design.

Todays funny Part 1

Fender Skirts
I haven't thought about "fender skirts" in years. When I was a kid,I considered it such a funny term. Made me think of a car in a dress. Thinking about "fender skirts" started me thinking about other words
that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice.
Like "curb feelers" and "steering knobs." Since I'd been thinking of
cars, my mind naturally went that direction first. Any kids will
probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of
these terms to you.
Remember "Continental kits?" They were rear bumper extenders and
spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a
Lincoln Continental

Blast from the past

Someone forwarded this to me, and I thought some of us of a "certain age" might remember most of these. I know I did.
